Description

This cistern is a characteristic example of a rural Cypriot water-storage structure. It is an open-air construction with stone-built outer walls and a concrete-lined interior, designed to collect and store large quantities of water. The stored water was mainly used for irrigating fields and orchards.

Construction and Form

The cistern is low, open, and rectangular or square in plan. Its interior walls are coated with concrete to ensure waterproofing and reduce water loss. Many such cisterns included shallow channels, outlets, or a smaller auxiliary basin to regulate the flow of water toward cultivated land.

Method of Operation

Water was directed into the cistern from a well, an alakati, a windmill, or later mechanical pumps. Once stored, it was distributed to the fields through channels or pipes, depending on the layout of the land. The cistern acted as a regulating reservoir, allowing controlled and gradual irrigation.

Use in Rural Life

In a region where water scarcity was a constant challenge, the cistern was vital to the Cypriot farmer. It ensured the survival of crops during dry periods and formed a central element of everyday agricultural practice.

Social and Environmental Significance

The cistern reflects traditional knowledge of water conservation and land management. Together with wells, animal-powered mechanisms, and windmills, it formed part of an integrated irrigation system based on sustainability, self-sufficiency, and adaptation to local environmental conditions.
