Description and Function

The built stone feeding troughs (pachnes) are sturdy constructions designed for feeding large working animals such as oxen and mules. In this space there are eight troughs in total, indicating that the household maintained a considerable number of animals—an essential resource for agricultural work, transport, and daily labour in the rural economy.

Construction and Features

These troughs were particularly well-made, spacious, and carefully maintained. At the front of each trough, a horizontal wooden beam was built into the stonework. This wooden element served an important protective function: it prevented the animal’s neck from rubbing directly against the rough stone while eating, reducing injury and irritation.

Role in Traditional Rural Life

Feeding troughs of this type were indispensable in households that relied heavily on working animals. Their solid construction ensured durability, while their thoughtful design reflected the care given to the animals that supported the family’s livelihood. The number and scale of the troughs showcase the economic and agricultural capacity of the rural household.
