Room with Loft
Architecture and structure
The room with a low loft (sente) is an elongated space, where the large sente on its northern side rests on the eastern and western walls. It is raised about 1.00 m above the floor and has a slight slope toward the north.
Its flooring is made of large local gypsum stones, left unpolished before they would naturally harden into a marble-like form. This material choice served a practical purpose: cereals could be easily poured onto the sente and roll toward the back, while also being better protected, since they were not in contact with the earthen floor and remained well ventilated.
Usage and function of the space
The room was mainly used for storage and for tasks related to cereals. Here, grain—mostly wheat—was ground using the hand mill, a process that required a stable, clean, and sheltered environment.
Apart from food supplies, various household items were also stored here, as indicated by the corner built-in cupboard (toicharmaro), revealing the well-organized and practical nature of the space.
